Looking forward: 2017

As the year starts, it’s always exciting to look forward to the events and goals that are ahead of us.  Our family recently sat down to create some resolutions and goals, and I wanted to share a few of them here.

We also did something different this year:  we set 1-year goals and 3-year goals.  The inspiration for that idea comes from this quote by Bill Gates:

“We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.”

Success builds on past success (or failure).  Even if we come up short on our one-year resolutions, we’ll be setting the foundation for future progress.  So – in order to keep that encouragement–we talked about both short and long term time horizons.

What we found was interesting:  the 3-year goals tended to focus more on meaningful experiences and lasting strategy, while the 1-year was more about obligations and execution.  I’d recommend expanding your time horizon if your resolutions or commitments feel more like work than inspiration.

So, here are a few that we’re planning to accomplish for 2017 and beyond.

One Year Resolutions:

-Fast for 24-hours, monthly

-Complete a 10-day cold shower experiment

-Exercise for 5 minutes, 5x per week

-Read 1 book per month

-Write and share a blog post twice per month

3 year resolutions

-Own a(nother) home

-Make an minimum viable product for our best business idea

-Vacation to Hawaii

-Take a family biking trip

-Have been skydiving again

Should be an exciting few years ahead!
